This webinar course discussed methods that can be used to measure emissions from spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation using the following ASTM standard and work items:

  • ASTM D7859-13e1 Standard Practice for Spraying, Sampling, Packaging, and Test Specimen Preparation of SPF Insulation for Testing of Emissions Using Environmental Chambers
  • WK40293 Test Method for Determination of Vapor-Phase Organic Compounds Emitted from SPF using Micro-Scale Environmental Test Chambers
  • WK51589 Estimating Emissions of Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) from SPF Insulation using Emission Cells or Micro-Scale Environmental Test Chambers
  • WK51588 Standard Method for Measuring Chemical Emissions from SPF in a Large-Scale Spray Room
  • WK52052 Conducting Emission and Fate Modeling for SPF Insulation in an Indoor Environment

The primary focus of the webinar was on preparing samples for analysis in the laboratory and measuring emissions of SPF insulation with micro-scale chambers (D7859-13e1 and WK40293). Selection of sorbent tubes and the analytical methods were discussed to measure emissions of blowing agents, amine catalysts, flame retardants, aldehydes, and VOCs. Furthermore, there was an introduction to measuring emissions in a large-scale spray room and predicting emission with fate modeling software (WK51588 and WK52052).
